About our centres

A special hug for a special donkey

The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys (EST) is a UK based charity dedicated to providing riding therapy with donkeys to children with special needs and disabilities.

The aims of the EST are to bring enjoyment and pleasure into their lives and to give them the satisfaction that comes with the achievement of learning riding skills.

Riding skills are taught by qualified riding instructors using the donkey because of its placid nature. In addition, children are encouraged to groom and care for the donkeys.

The children who attend the centres have a wide range of disabilities; some may have learning difficulties, others are physically disabled or have behavioural problems, brain damage or sensory impairment.

Edinburgh Marathon

Edinburgh Marathon 2009

EST has two charity running places at next year's Edinburgh Marathon taking place on Sunday 31st May 2009.

The Edinburgh Marathon is the second largest marathon in the UK after The Flora London Marathon. The 26.2 mile long scenic route has been designed for runners to see as many aspects of Scotland's wonderful capital and scenic eastern coastlines as possible.

Christmas fair at Ivybridge

EST Ivybridge will be holding a Christmas Fair on Saturday 13 December, 10.00 am till 3.00 pm. This will take place of our normal Saturday Club. Entry is free and every one is welcome. Come and have a ride on our donkey-pulled Christmas cart and visit Santa in his grotto! There will be lots of stalls and games, and a raffle. Mince pies and mulled wine will be on sale, as well as other festive treats.

Mega Ride 2008

Plymouth Mega-Ride

There is an annual event held locally called the Plymouth Mega-Ride which is attended by several thousand motorbike enthusiasts, who each donate £2 to ride on the day. One of our volunteers, Alison Mooney, nominated EST Ivybridge this year and along with the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association, were the two chosen charities to benefit from this year's ride. Both Alison and Bob Venn, Centre Principal, attended the presentation ceremony earlier this week, where each charity received a cheque for £3,452.50.
